Updated, as of 6:15 p.m. on July 1:
US-50 is back open in both directions after being shut down for most of Friday afternoon for a truck fire.
Original Story:
Two separate big rig trucks have caught fire on major roadways connecting Reno and Sacramento Friday afternoon, taking a hit on early Fourth of July travelers in this region.
One is burning on Highway 50 in the Kyburz area, shutting the roadway down in both directions. The second one is burning on I-80 just east of Colfax, shutting down westbound lanes.
Heavy delays are expected for holiday travelers on both Highway 50 and I-80 in both directions.
The big rig fire just east of Kyburz has turned into a brush fire.
Fire crews are battling the I-80 blaze from both the ground and air with helicopter support.
There is no estimated time of reopening for either roadway as of 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
This is a developing story and will be updated as information continues to come in.
