As wind gusts are expected to move through the Tahoe region this weekend, Independence Day drone light shows have been postponed for some North Lake Tahoe areas. Incline Village's display will remain as scheduled.
To say we’re disappointed to have to postpone the Kings Beach show and Beach Party would be a tremendous understatement,” said Alyssa Reilly, executive director of the North Tahoe Business Association. “We have been looking forward to and planning for this show for the past several months, but by announcing this decision now, our hope is that people will have time to find other ways to celebrate and that they will continue to support our local businesses.
The North lake Tahoe resort, business, and downtown associations were collaborating to put on the new drone shows for the next three years in an effort to reduce wildfire risks.
The drone show displays will be held for the Labor Day holiday instead of this Fourth of July weekend.
“This decision did not come easily, nor is it something that the collective group took lightly,” said Tony Karwowski, NLTRA president and CEO
However, officials cited unseasonable weather, mostly high wind gusts, would make the drone shows unable to meet safety standards.
Without the drones, North Tahoe Fire reminds both residents and visitors that even in the absence of drone shows, fireworks are still not permitted in unincorporated Placer County. Additionally, all open burning and recreational fires remain banned for North Lake Tahoe.
“Wind regimes vary across the lake, it’s important to remember that surface winds are different from the winds at the flight altitude. Conditions felt on the ground are not the conditions experienced at the altitude where the drones fly. As we celebrate this holiday weekend, we remind people to dress in layers as the weather will be cooler than normal, and conditions on the water are forecast to be choppy. Please ensure all boaters are wearing life jackets,” said North Tahoe Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Brent Armstrong.
The Incline Village Crystal Bay SkyShow will go on as planned on July 4 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Incline Village Middle School Ball Fields.
