"After reviewing weather forecast of 70% rain and possible storms tonight, for the interest of public safety, we are canceling the City's fireworks display tonight. We hope everyone will have a happy, safe Fourth of July," an announcement on the city's Facebook page stated.

The city also reminds residents that it recently updated its fireworks ordinance to align with a new state law, which became effective Friday.

New law:Here's where Akron area residents can set off fireworks on July 4th

Under the law, individuals are allowed to set off certain types of fireworks on certain days. The type of fireworks permitted, formerly known as Class C common fireworks, are classified as 1.4G explosives, or consumer fireworks intended for use by the general public.

For the July 4 holiday, permitted days include July 3, 4, and 5, and the Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays immediately preceding and following July 4 holiday.
