The Shasta County District Attorney's Office says concerned citizens are reporting that they’ve received a scam phone call where the scammer is claiming to be an investigator from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. This scam is not a new scam and has been occurring in various parts of the United States.
Prosecutors say the scam works as follows: citizens are targeted by phone calls and emails, where the scammer claims to be a law enforcement official and threatens prosecution or arrest for failing to comply with a jury summons or court date. The scammer also pressures the recipient to provide confidential data, potentially leading to identity theft and fraud.
The DA's Office would like to remind Shasta County residents that any phone contact by law enforcement officials will not include requests for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information.
Anyone receiving such a telephone call or email should not provide the requested information and should simply hang up on the caller.
