John Tortorella’s coaching staff in Philadelphia is starting to take form. Brad Shaw will be joining the Flyers as an associate coach. Shaw, 58, is familiar with Tortorella as they worked together in Columbus from 2016-2021.

While coaching in Columbus, Shaw was mainly in charge of the penalty kill and defense. He’ll be in the same position with Philadelphia. Shaw has been known to run an aggressive penalty kill unit, which played a factor in the success and competitiveness that the Blue Jackets had during the Tortorella era.

The penalty kill and defensive system that Shaw makes the team harder to play against, which was visible in the Blue Jackets’ style from 2016-2021. Chuck Fletcher and Tortorella have mentioned that the Flyers need to be harder to play against and this is the first step in making that happen.

Shaw had the privilege to coach elite NHL defensemen in Columbus such as Seth Jones and Zach Werenski.

Yeo joins the Canucks

Former Flyers assistant and interim head coach, Mike Yeo, will be joining the Vancouver Canucks as an assistant coach. Yeo took over the Flyers after Alain Vigneault was fired in December. Yeo was the head coach for 62 games and had a record of 18-37-7 over that span.
