WXII 12 News talked with Luke Mallicoat, the son of Christina Mallicoat, on Wednesday.
Mallicoat said his mother was hanging out on the front porch that night for about an hour when someone on a bicycle or scooter approached her, and tried to rob his mother.
He said his mother yelled for him.
"I got pretty scared because I knew at that point it got pretty serious, and I needed to do something," Mallicoat said.
Mallicoat said he came outside with his hunting rifle where the suspect shot and killed his mother. He said the suspect shot at him too, but missed.
Mallicoat quickly called 911 where first responders arrived shortly after, he said.
"I grabbed the phone, called 911, took off my t-shirt, and applied it as a tourniquet," he said.
WXII 12 News talked with Candice Burrows, who lives near Mallicoat. She said she was watching a movie in her living room that night when she heard the gunshots.
"Oh my God. It scared me. I hit the floor. It felt like it was right in my front yard. It was extremely scary."
Burrows said that she and other neighbors have been checking on Mallicoat since the shooting. They said he depended on his mother.
"The very first thing we all said is what about Luke? Her son. Because it’s just the two of them, and Luke depends on her completely," Burrows said.
Burrows said Mallicoat is a good person.
She added that she has taken him to go grocery shopping, but is concerned for his safety and well-being going forward.
"We (neighbors) love him, and we’re here for him," she said.
Mallicoat said he appreciates his neighbors' kindness. He said he is hoping police will find the person responsible for his mother's death and for changing his life forever.
"My mom did not deserve to be shot by this person, and that person who did this should come forward," he said.
