Residents displaced, cat found dead after Omaha apartment fire

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Red Cross has been called to help people displaced from an apartment building after a fire.

The fire happened just north of 34th and Dodge at 2:32 p.m. Friday.

A fire was reported outside the building on the rear deck. The deck collapsed due to the fire and flames entered the apartment’s interior.

Crews were able to get the fire under control shortly after arriving.

No injuries were reported, but crews did say one cat died due to the fire.

Extensive damage was also caused to the apartment building, causing roughly $50,000 in damages. Several residents of the building were displaced and power was disconnected due to the damage caused by the fire.

According to the Omaha Fire Department, the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
