HistoriCorps Volunteers Needed for Restoration Work at the Homeplace
Land Between the Lakes is partnering with HistoriCorps to restore the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm’s iconic Double Pen House- and we need your help! Everyone can be a HistoriCorps Volunteer. Volunteers on this project will learn and apply traditional roofing skills to preserve the Double Pen House. Aside from being comfortable with heights, no prior experience is needed! HistoriCorps will provide all the training, safety equipment, meals, tools, and a campsite as part of our partnership. Four project sessions will be offered in September and October 2022.
Get all the details and register to volunteer on the HistoriCorps website or read more on our blog.
Moss Creek Day Use Area Closed for Tornado Recovery Efforts
Moss Creek Day Use Area experienced catastrophic damage from the December 2021 EF-4 tornado and is temporarily closed, including access to it via road and water.
Closures allow critical recovery and repair work to be accomplished safely and efficiently. We will not reopen Moss Creek Day Use Area until hazards have been satisfactorily mitigated and the site has been rebuilt to safely accommodate visitors. Storm-damaged trees can fall unpredictably, causing injury or death. Falling snags and limbs, stump holes, unstable ground, downed trees, and debris are extremely dangerous and can all occur in a post-tornado landscape.
Crews are working to remove storm-damaged trees and the amount of people coming into this closed area is hindering completion of the project and delaying Moss Creek’s reopening even further. The gate is closed and notices have been posted along the shoreline, and people caught in this area will be ticketed. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to safely reopen this facility.
For other lake access locations, please see our website.
