LETTER: Did Supreme Court decision awaken a sleeping giant?
On Dec. 7, 1941, victorious Japanese pilots were returning to raucous celebrations on their carrier decks. The feelings throughout the Japanese Fleet were jubilant.
All except on the flag deck of the Akagi, where the hero of the hour, Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander of the carrier group overseeing the Pearl Harbor attack, seemed thoughtful and pensive.
When his staff asked him what was wrong, the admiral responded with a quote that was both grim and prophetic, and remembered by history. He said, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
Many conservative Republicans are now celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a goal Republicans have long sought for decades.
However, you might note that the upper echelons of the party aren't doing victory laps. The reason for this is that they know that this "victory" may well cost them the war.
This decision has taken from Republicans the one drum that they had to bang against Democrats that the Democratic Party could never really overcome. Clarence Thomas's addition to the ruling, stating that the rights to contraception and the rights of homosexuals to marry are the next targets on the chopping block of the conservative Christians on the court, told the world what Republicans wanted to conceal.
With this one decision the Supreme Court has done something that Democrats could not seem to do themselves. Bring together a unified Democratic Party. Or in other words, awakened a sleeping giant and filled it with a terrible resolve, to win the midterm elections.
