The Pittsburgh Pirates offense has seen a pair of impressive performances in recent days. First, Bryan Reynolds belted three homers against the Nationals on Wednesday, leading Pittsburgh to a 8-7 victory. Not to be outdone, Michael Perez hit three homers of his own on Thursday as the Pirates earned another 8-7 victory, this time over the Brewers.

If it seems as though it has been a long time since teammates had three homer games in back to back days, that is because it has. The last time this happened was in 1930 when Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig had their three homer games on consecutive days.

Pittsburgh Pirates get unlikely historical performance

That three homer game from Reynolds was not entirely unlikely. He does have 15 homers on the season and did belt a career best 24 home runs last season. As he turned 27 years old this year and is just entering his theoretical prime, he could eventually hit 30 or more homers in a season. Such displays of power are not out of the question.

Perez having a three homer game is more of a shock. Those three home runs doubled his season total and brought him to 15 homers in his career. He also had never had a multi-homer game in the majors before Thursday night and had a total of 61 homers in 2483 minor league plate appearances. He is not exactly going to be confused for a power threat.

But that is the beauty of baseball. The unexpected and improbable can happen at any moment. Such was the case on Wednesday and Thursday when a pair of unlikely players tied themselves to the legendary Ruth and Gehrig.

Next. So much for Jerad Eickhoff. dark

The Pittsburgh Pirates made history over the past two days. Bryan Reynolds and Michael Perez have etched their names alongside Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
