John Hugh Bazemore died on June 27, 2022 at the age of 84.

He was the only son of Hugh and Bertha Willoughby Bazemore. His sisters Margaret Callis and Mary Ann Phelps are deceased.

Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Merle Council Bazemore, son Brad (Lisa) and daughters Lisa Salmon and Pam (Tim) Shippy, grandchildren Harper and Will Bazemore, Cameron and Mallory Salmon, Avery and Hailey Shippy, Brittany (Jason) Smith and Jessie (Andrew) Webb, great-grandsons Kayden Smith and Jett Webb. Hugh is also survived by three nieces: Anne Callis Born, JoLynn Callis Brown and Anne Phelps Wilson.

Hugh was born in Hertford County and was a graduate of Ahoskie High School, Campbell College, East Carolina College and Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking.

His 38-year banking career began in Ahoskie and continued to Greenville N.C., then Raleigh, and ended in Roanoke Rapids. He worked as City Executive in all 4 locations and retired as Regional Vice President.

As an avid sports fan he encouraged his children and grandchildren to participate in various sports. Baseball was his favorite, but he chose to not accept a pro baseball offer, after his college baseball career.

Everywhere he lived, civic and community organizations were important to him. He served on the Halifax Regional Hospital Board, Halifax County Economic Development Commission and was a member of Roanoke Rapids Lions Club for many years. In addition, he was a faithful and active member of Rosemary Baptist Church for over 40 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children’s Home Society of Greensboro NC or Rosemary Baptist Church 936 Jackson Street Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Rosemary Baptist Church with Dr. Layne Wallace officiating.
