Can't make it to the Des Moines Symphony's 28th Annual Yankee Doodle Pops performance in person Friday night?

Iowa PBS will be broadcasting the beloved show live for viewers to kick off Independence Day weekend in Des Moines, according to the broadcasting service.

Known as Iowa's largest public concert each year, drawing up to 100,000 people to the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol, Iowans have enjoyed the patriotic musical performance since 1994

The show went on hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic. And last year, the symphony recorded a version of the show for television even as live performances returned to the Civic Center with social distancing protocols in place.

"Iowa PBS is proud to partner again this year with the Des Moines Symphony to bring the tradition of Yankee Doodle Pops to all Iowans," said Molly Phillips, Iowa PBS executive director and general manager said. “This year's event returns to the Capitol grounds — but now as a live broadcast, adding to the excitement of this spirited July 4th celebration."

The music will begin at 6:30 pm with a concert prelude featuring the Turner Center Jazz Orchestra and the Des Moines Symphony Academy Youth Jazz Orchestra, according to a release from the Des Moines Symphony

The winner of the Des Moines Symphony’s annual "Oh Say, Can You Sing?" competition, Courtney Kayser, will open Yankee Doodle Pops with The Star-Spangled Banner at 8:30 p.m.

Iowa PBS will broadcast the performance statewide on Iowa PBS. Viewers can also catch the show on iowapbs.org/watchpbs.org/livestream, the PBS Video App and YouTube
