LYONS, Ga. -- Some onions sold in Publix stores in Florida earlier this month have been recalled due to potential Listeria contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
A&M farms in Lyons, Georgia, is issuing a recall on Little Bear brand whole Vadalia sweet onions packed on one pack line between June 20 and June 23.
The FDA sent out a company announcement about the recall on June 30.
The announcement states that the onions packed between the given dates may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
This is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
It may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Consumers can identify the recalled Vidalia Onions by the purchase location, PLU 4159 and Little Bear brand on the price look-up sticker.
Anyone who finds they have the recalled product in their possession should not consume it.
No other onions or products grown, packed, or sold by A&M Farms are included in this recall notice.
There have yet to be any reports of illness to the FDA regarding the product.
