Sydney Romero is joining the Duke coaching staff.
Romero will be a full-time assistant and serve as the Blue Devils’ hitting coach. She has never coached collegiately, though she did spend two seasons as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma, her alma mater.
In a statement, Duke head coach Marissa Young said, “”Who better to help take our program to the next level than someone who has won two national championships as a player and two more as a coach than Sydney Romero. She is one of the brightest young coaches that embodies our core values, is passionate about player development and brings a championship mindset as a proven winner. I know Sydney is going to have an immediate impact on our players and I am thrilled they get to learn from one of the best to play the game. We look forward to welcoming Sydney to Durham.”
Romero’s first coaching job will see her take over the shepherding of a Blue Devil offense that .330 as a unit during the 2022 season, with 97 home runs and 394 runs scored. The Blue Devils saw some of their leading hitters depart after the season, including top hitter Kristina Foreman (.398, 15 home runs, 56 RBIs) who transferred to Arkansas.
During her career as a player, Romero was the 2019 Big 12 Player of the Year; a 2-time first-team All-American; and helped lead the Sooners to back-to-back national championships in 2016 and ’17. She has played professionally in both the now-defunct National Pro Fastpitch league and with Athletes Unlimited.
