PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) As the opening of NHL free agency nears, the rumors have been swirling regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang.
According to David Pagnotta, the Penguins and Letang specifically are making significant progress.
Pagnotta joined the PM Team on 93.7 the Fan and said that the money is set to be around $7-8 million per year.
The recent rumors were that Letang wanted as many as five years on a new contract around $8 or $9 million.
General manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke made it clear that after re-singing Bryan Rust, getting a Letang deal done was the team’s top priority.
According to Pagnotta, at this stage, the Penguins are more likely to re-sign Letang and allow Malkin to test free agency.
Once a Letang contract gets resolved, then the attention can turn to Malkin.
