Big rig fires cause Sierra travel delays on I-80, Highway 50 on Friday
Two big rig fires on major routes in the Sierra caused delays on Friday afternoon, as many headed to Tahoe for the Fourth of July weekend. A portion of westbound Interstate 80 near Colfax is closed after a big rig caught fire, Caltrans said. Westbound traffic was being diverted off at Rollins Lake Road. The fast lane of eastbound traffic was used as a staging area for emergency vehicles, Caltrans said. There have also been delays on Highway 50, which was closed in both directions east of Kyburz earlier Friday after a big rig caught on fire in El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol said. As of 6 p.m., both lanes of Highway 50 reopened. A photo shared by CHP showed the vehicle on fire and CHP said nearby vegetation was also on fire. The incident happened around 10:20 a.m., according to Caltrans information online. Delays on both roadways come as many are traveling in advance of the Fourth of July holiday.
