WAUPACA (WLUK) -- A swim advisory will be lifted at South Park Beach in Waupaca Saturday morning.
Signs have declared the beach "swim at your own risk" since June 24. County health officials had been investigating reports of illnesses among swimmers.
On Friday, the county health department announced the illnesses were likely caused by norovirus, which was found in testing of the swimmers. That conclusion is not considered definitive, however.
Norovirus causes vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping.
City officials say the advisory will be lifted at 10 a.m. Saturday. Since it has been seven days since the last report of illness, any virus in the water is likely to have dissolved with the lake's natural filtration and turnover. City workers have also cleaned all shared-use facilities.
Swimmers using the beach are advised to take these precautions:
- Do not swim while experiencing symptoms of diarrhea or vomiting.
- Do not swallow recreational swim water. You can get sick if you swallow contaminated recreational water -- water in pools, hot tubs, water playgrounds, or oceans, lakes, and rivers. In fact, diarrhea is the most common illness reported for outbreaks linked to recreational water.
- Take kids on bathroom breaks and check diapers every hour.
- Handwashing is one of the most important steps to help prevent the spread of norovirus and other pathogens. It is essential to wash hands after using the restroom.
Swimming lessons that were canceled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have been rescheduled to the same days next week.
