PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix exchanged gunfire with a man late Thursday and later found him wounded at a home, where they took him into custody.

The Phoenix Police Department said in a press release Friday no one else was injured in the shooting near 107th Avenue and Camelback Road, in the area of the Camelback Ranch spring training complex.

Police said they had been called to the area around 11:15 p.m. to look into a report about a suspicious person.

As officers were talking to a man they saw at the scene, they heard a gunshot close by.

Police said another man, identified as Kristopher Johnson, 40, then appeared and was carrying a weapon. They ordered him to put down the gun. Instead, according to the press release, Johnson fired in their direction several times.

Officers returned fire before he fled on foot.

They gave chase but lost sight of Johnson in the neighborhood.

A little while later, someone called police to report seeing a man with a gunshot wound in the area.

Police found Johnson at a home. He was taken to a hospital.

ABC15 reported Johnson’s injuries weren’t life-threatening and that the accused shooter and the suspicious person were not connected.

The investigation is ongoing.

No other details were made available.

It was the 14th shooting of the year by Phoenix Police and 29th overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
