A Mass of Christian Burial for Cletus J. VonBank was held Monday, May 30, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant was the Rev. Bill Schreiber. Military rites were conducted by members of V.F.W. Post #2295, Emmetsburg.
Inurnment was in Calvary Cemetery at Marshall, MN. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Cletus Joseph VonBank, son of Nick and Christine (Wick) VonBank was born March 19, 1930 in Jordan, MN. He received his education at St. John the Baptist Catholic School and graduated from Jordan High School in 1948. Cletus served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1948 until 1952 when he was honorably discharged.
After returning to Minnesota, Cletus owned and operated a Mobile gas station in Jordan. On Aug. 3, 1957 Cletus was united in marriage to Shirley Buesgens at Lady of the Catholic Church in Belle Plaine, MN. They were blessed with three daughters.
The opportunity arose to purchase a gas station in Fort Dodge which brought the VonBank family to Iowa. After several years in the gas station, Cletus moved to Emmetsburg and became the Fuller Brush Man. In 1980 he was transferred to Marshall, MN where he was promoted in the Fuller Brush business and served this company for 30 years. After Shirley’s death, Cletus moved back to Emmetsburg to be closer to his family.
Cletus was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall, MN and most recently Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. His faith was very important to him and he always tried to maintain a “Positive Mental Attitude” (P.M.A.)
Cletus enjoyed playing Bridge and 500 with his card clubs. He was also an avid Cribbage player. What Cletus loved most was spending time with his three girls and their families.
Cletus passed away Friday, May 27, 2022 at his home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Christine VonBank; his wife, Shirley VonBank; a daughter, Liz DeBlieck; and two sisters.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Bob Wilson of New Richmond, WI, Angie and Jim Vaughan of Mallard, and Wayne DeBlieck of Granite Falls, MN; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and expecting the tenth in November; siblings, Jack VonBank and Sister Sue VonBank, S.S.N.D.; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Merlin Buesgens, Sandy Buesgens and Myrtle Buesgens; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
