Butler County Jury finds man guilty in attack where mother, her son burned by hot oil
A man charged in connection with throwing hot vegetable oil on one of his cousins and her baby while they slept at their home in Hamilton was found guilty by a jury Friday.
It happened Dec. 21, 2021 on Grant Boulevard when Jayla Witt called 911 saying she and her baby were burned after someone broke into their house.
Jayla and her son were transported to Dayton for treatment. The family said she suffered severe burns to her face and head.
Her 16-month-old son, Tobias, suffered burns to his arm and down the side of his body.
Maloney was arrested and charged with felonious assault. A jury found Maloney guilty Friday on three felony counts. In the courtroom Friday, the victim's dad could be seen crying as the verdict was read.
Maloney was sentenced to 37 years in prison Friday. A judge added 10 years to his sentence since he's a repeat violent offender.
He was charged in 2000 in a deadly baseball bat beating.
