CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A motorcyclist lost his life in a Carroll County crash Wednesday night following an attempted traffic stop.

Virginia State Police say they responded to the single-vehicle crash shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 on Route 722, about a third of a mile east of Route 731.

According to authorities, a 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle was heading east on Route 722 when it lost control, flipped onto its side, slid off the roadway, and spun around, ejecting the motorcyclist in the process.

The motorcyclist — identified by officials as 30-year-old Cristiam Linarez Huerta of Galax — went down the embankment and into a culvert. Even though he was wearing a helmet, he died at the scene of the crash.

Police tell WFXR News that Carroll County deputies tried to perform a traffic stop on Huerta before the wreck.

According to Virginia State Police, excessive speed is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash, which is still under investigation as of this writing.
