Carjacking suspect accused of assaulting victim arrested in Kennebunk

Police in Portland say the suspect in several carjackings was taken into custody on Friday.

Spokesman David Singer said the suspect was identified as 41-year-old Richard McDowell, a transient of Portland. He was arrested in Kennebunk.

Police said McDowell approached someone near 1450 Congress Street around 10:10 a.m. Friday and threatened them with a sharp object while trying to steal their vehicle but the person refused.

Minutes later, McDowell allegedly attacked the driver of a Porsche and seriously injured them. He was later seen pulling the driver out of a black Honda Civic and stealing their vehicle.

Singer says McDowell abandoned the vehicle on Alewive Road in Kennebunk.

The victim who was seriously injured was brought to Maine Medical Center, where they were being treated for non-life threatening injuries on Friday.

McDowell was taken to Cumberland County Jail where’s he’s being held on $150,000 bail. He’s charged with multiple counts of robbery and elevated aggravated assault.
