SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Two men and a woman are behind bars, accused of beating a man with a crow bar, robbing him and then leaving the victim along a rural Minnehaha County road.
Not long after the trio took off, a student nurse drove by, followed by an off-duty deputy.
The off-duty deputy was driving on this stretch of I-90 on Sunday afternoon when he spotted what looked like a man lying on Ditch Road.
“He was not working, he called Metro communications, he did respond to the area,” Capt. Josh Phillips with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office said.
When he got to Ditch Road, the deputy discovered a nursing student had also stopped. She was putting pressure on the victim’s wounds. The man had serious cuts on his forehead and the back of his head.
Court papers say the victim was going in and out of consciousness as they waited for an ambulance. He thought he’d been attacked with a knife, but that wasn’t what happened.
“Through the course of the investigation, we found out and determined it was a crow bar,” Phillips said.
The victim’s been in the hospital all week.
With the help of surveillance video, a license plate and social media authorities were able to gather enough information and evidence to link three people to the crime.
“Detectives were able to determine who was involved, the vehicle and able to put all three individuals in that place,” Phillips said.
Tonight all three suspects, William High Hawk, Lucus Kleinschmit and Mona Little Bald Eagle, are in the Minnehaha County jail, charged with aggravated assault and robbery.

The victim is now in stable condition – thanks in part to the selfless actions of a nursing student and an off-duty deputy.
Court papers say the suspects met the victim in a bar and stole his credit card before driving him out of town.
All three suspects have criminal records. High Hawk is out on parole for drug charges
