The incident happened about 11:30 p.m. on Hotel Circle South, Officer Robert Heims said.
The man was walking along the shoulder of the north side of the road, headed east next to westbound traffic. A 2011 Honda CRV was headed west.
The pedestrian tried to run across the street in front of the oncoming SUV, but was struck, Heims said.
The man sustained a skull fracture, a brain bleed and other injures, the officer said.
The 30-year-old man driving the SUV was not injured.
Heims said alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
