Rhodus: The farmer behind the ESCC Farmers Market

Colleen Rhodus can describe the Excelsior Springs Community Center Farmers Market, held 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday, in less than 25 words. “(It’s) a simple, easy, fun, family friendly, come-in-and-have-a-good-time farmers market,” Rhodus said. Rhodus, market coordinator, started as a vendor at the market, selling straw bales, corn stalks and pumpkins. In the early spring of 2021 during a vendor meeting, Rhodus was handed the job of market coordinator. “He (former coordinator) handed me a notebook and said, ‘Here, you’re in charge,’” she recalled. Rhodus, whose farm family has existed for 100-plus years in Excelsior Springs and who has owned her own business, immediately began work on the market. Looking at the vendors she had and what work needed to be done, she said her first step as coordinator was networking. “I started going to other markets and calling other markets and talking to people,” said Rhodus. “The seed got planted. … It just took off and blossomed.” Rhodus got help from the…
