Just before the calendar turned to July, the Braves acquired righty Silvino Bracho from the Red Sox in exchange for cash. And today, the club activated him for the series opener against the Reds and optioned Jesus Cruz to Gwinnett to make room on the active roster.

Ian Anderson could only make it through two innings in Thursday’s throttling by the Phillies. Cruz came in to eat up as many innings as possible, and went 2.2 innings, tossing 55 pitches. The move to active Bracho is likely just for depth purposes given the high usage of Cruz last night, but the big man has been struggling, so it could be more permanent. Bracho isn’t exactly lights out either, though.
Bracho last appeared in the majors in 2020 for the Diamondbacks. For his entire career, he boasts a pedestrian 4.82 ERA over 92 appearances. However, he’s put some pretty solid numbers up in AAA for the Red Sox, recording a 3.16 ERA and 10.3 K/9 in 31.1 innings. Bracho also was lights out last year in the Venezuelan Winter League.
The Braves begin a three-game series against the lowly Reds tonight as they look to gain even more ground on the division-leading Mets, who are 3.5 games up on Atlanta.
