HOLDREGE, Neb. —
Another library in central Nebraska is going fine free.

Holdrege Area Public Library said that as of Friday, July 1, no overdue fines will be charged. Staff said only lost materials will incur a charge to patrons, and then only for replacement costs.
The library said that since overdue charges constituted for less than half of one percent of their yearly income, it was time for a change.
“Given the comparatively minor amount, the Library Board felt that it was better to just budget without the fines, and find ways to make the library more welcoming to patrons, rather than less,” said Library Director Mike Burris.
