Northwest Iowa (KICD)– Several area communities are asking residents to conserve water due to ongoing dry conditions that are putting extra pressure on city systems.
The cities of Storm Lake, Sheldon, Wahpeton and Marcus have all made the plea that residents avoid using water during main daylight hours for watering lawns, filling private pools and washing of vehicles, buildings and concrete.
All affected communities are putting these regulations in place as away to get ahead of any potential water issues instead of having to quickly react.
Besides the developing drought, the City of Storm Lake is watching water usage due to one of its wells currently being offline for maintenance with the City of Marcus in a similar situation as its water tower is being drained for work that is expected to last through much of the month of July.
The latest Drought Monitor released Thursday by the USDA has the severe drought expanding into sections of Buena Vista, Cherokee, O’Brien, Palo Alto and Pocahontas Counties with an area of D3 Extreme Drought making an appearance in western portions of Plymouth and Woodbury Counties.
