AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) - The weak cold front will bring a wind shift to the High Plains today. It will help try to spark a few thunderstorms in the northwest Panhandles this evening but coverage will be somewhat limited. That being said, there is a MARGINAL RISK for a storm or two to become severe this evening capable of 1" hail and 70 MPH winds between 5-10PM CDT. The big reason for the increased risk for severe storms and a slightly better chance for rain is due to the cold front surging further south than models suggested. This is a common issue with model guidance in the High Plains,
A small upper-level shortwave will pass through the area over the ridge this weekend which will create isolated T-Storm chances again Saturday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.
We will remain dry for the 4th of July itself and high temperatures climb to the mid and upper 90s feeling warmer than normal for your festivities. We will have some elevated fire conditions Monday in the SW Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico so be careful with how you celebrate the 4th.
We have another round of rain chances enter the forecast for next Tuesday through Thursday. The first half of July will mainly feature hot weather mostly in the low 100s.
