PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — An investigation is underway into a deadly shooting by Pinellas County deputies of a car-jacking suspect.

It happened Thursday afternoon in Safety Harbor after what police call a multi-county crime spree.

Four deputies fired at 43-year old Robert Hubbard, killing him.

Authorities said Hubbard car-jacked a victim at gunpoint Wednesday in Hillsborough County and then attempted an armed robbery in the Trinity area of Pasco County.

Deputies later spotted the stolen car in Safety Harbor and chased him until they were able to run him into a tire trap on Phillipe Parkway near Enterprise Road.

“When the tires deflated they continue to follow him until this area to the north of me on Philippe. When they got here, he got out of the car armed with a handgun pointed at both of the deputies at which point the deputies fired,” said Clearwater Police Department Deputy Chief Michael Walek.

The deputies involved are on paid administrative leave while the Pinellas County use of deadly force task force lead by Clearwater police investigates.

That is the usual policy.
