Man arrested after shooting in Roanoke Thursday night
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A Roanoke man has been arrested after a shooting that occurred in Roanoke City Thursday night.
The Roanoke Police Department says they received a call about a gunshot wound around 10:30 p.m. They say the incident occurred in the 4500 block of Melrose Avenue.
After investigating police determined the suspect was 51-year-old Sterling D. Whitfield. Early investigations pointed to an argument between the two men which escalated to the shooting. Whitfield fled the scene before officers arrived.
Police say later, they saw Whitfield driving his vehicle near the scene. Police positively identified Whitfield and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Whitfield didn’t cooperate when police attempted to pull him over and began speeding away. Officers chased Whitfield to Country Club Drive NW, where he crashed his vehicle and attempted to run from the scene. After a short chase, officers arrested Whitfield without further incident.
Whitfield was charged with malicious wounding, brandishing, abduction, hit-and-run and felony eluding. He is being held at the Roanoke City Jail.
