Seattle Opera Announces New Chorus Master & Head of Music

By David Salazar

Seattle Opera has announced that Michaella Calzare will be the company’s new Chorus Master and Head of Music.

Calzare will prepare the Seattle Opera Chorus for the upcoming season, where it will appear in productions of “L’Elisir d’Amore,” “Tristan und Isolde,” “Samson et Dalila,” and “La Traviata.” Calzare will succeed John Keene, who is headed to San Francisco Opera this January.

Calzare’s previous experience includes being the chorus master and assistant conductor at Utah Opera. She has also worked with Pittsburgh Festival Opera and the Indiana University Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

“I am thrilled to bring Michaella’s energy and experience to work with Seattle Opera,” said Christina Scheppelmann, the General Director of Seattle Opera, in an official press statement. “Michaella connected immediately with our choristers, creating positive musical results right away. Her collaborative style and thoughtful approach fit perfectly with our company.”
