Two men identified in double homicide near Oxmoor Mall
Rebekah Duvall was sitting in her apartment around 8 p.m. Thursday when her boyfriend called her outside.
"There was this woman just pacing up and down the sidewalk, screaming, very distraught, sobbing," Duvall recalled. "And then at some point, I just heard her say, 'He's dead.'"
The scene shocked Duvall, who lives in Oxmoor Apartment Homes, an out-of-the-way complex behind Oxmoor Mall.
Police have released few details, but on Friday the Jefferson County Coroner's office released the names of the two victims – Stephen Curtis, 40, and Gary Brown, 21.
The two men were fatally shot at 1:37 a.m., according to the coroner's office.
Family members who declined to be interviewed told WLKY News Curtis lived in the apartment.
Holes could be seen outside Curtis's apartment and an apartment across the hall.
A resident who lives in the neighboring apartment and did not want to be identified said the bullets exited Curtis's apartment and then struck her apartment. A five-year-old boy was inside the room that was struck, she said.
For her part, Duvall said she is reconsidering what safety measures to take in an otherwise quiet apartment community.
"It was a little surreal because that kind of stuff doesn't always happen in your backyard," she said.
