THIS IS WLKY NEWS AT 6. GOOD EVENING. I’M VICKI GEORGE TONIGHT. WE’VE LEARNED THE NAMES OF THE TWO MEN FOUND DEAD INSIDE AN APARTMENT NEAR THE OXMOOR CENTER STEPHEN CURTIS AND GARY BROWN WERE SHOT TO DEATH INSIDE AN APARTMENT ON STEEPLECREST CIRCLE LAST NIGHT WLKY IS MARK VANDERHOFF TALKED WITH NEIGHBORS ABOUT WHAT THEY HEARD AND SAW. THIS APARTMENT COMPLEX IS RIGHT BEHIND OXMOOR MALL A PLACE WHERE RESIDENTS TELL US. THEY NEVER EXPECTED. ONE MUCH LESS TWO MURDERS REBECCA. DUVALL WAS IN HER APARTMENT WHEN HER BOYFRIEND CALLED HER OUTSIDE. THERE’S THIS WOMAN JUST PACING UP AND DOWN THE SIDEWALK SCREAMING AND VERY DISTRAUGHT SOBBING AND THEN AT SOME POINT I JUST HEARD HER SAY LIKE HE’S DEAD THAT WAS AROUND 8 PM THURSDAY NIGHT RIGHT OUTSIDE THIS BUILDING ON STEEPLECREST CIRCLE IN THE OXMOOR APARTMENT HOMES, AND THEN BY 10:30 AT NIGHT. THEY HAD THIS WHOLE BUILDING ALL THE SIDEWALKS CLOSED DOWN INSURANCE CLOSED. NO ONE COULD GET IN OR OUT EVERYBODY WAS PARKING ON THE STREETS AND WALKING UP POLICE ARE RELEASING FEW DETAILS THE CORNER IDENTIFIED THE TWO MEN AS 40 YEAR OLD STEPHEN CURTIS AND 21 YEAR OLD GARY BROWN AND SAYS THEY DIED AT 1:37 AM THURSDAY FAMILY MEMBERS SAY CURTIS LIVED AT THAT APARTMENT GARY, YOU KNOW, SHE’S TAKING ME BACK HOLES CAN BE SEEN WHERE EXITED THE APARTMENT AND THEN TRAVELED INTO THE NEIGHBORING APARTMENT THE NEIGHBOR NEXT DOOR TELLS US A FIVE YEAR OLD WAS IN THE ROOM WHERE THOSE STRAY BULLETS HIT AND WAS LUCKILY UNINJURED. ANOTHER NEIGHBOR SAYS THINGS ARE NORMALLY QUIET HERE. IT’S KIND OF SCARY FOR ME BECAUSE IT WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF IT. YEAH, YOU NEVER HEARD ANY GUNFIRE OR ANYTHING. NO IN HERE. NOTHING NO GUN FIRE. DID YOU KNOW THE GUYS THAT LIVE DOWNSTAIRS AT ALL? NO. BIG APARTMENT COMPLEX. THEY JUST WALK BY IT GOING TO THE POOL. DUVALL SAYS SHE’LL BE LOCKING HER DOORS FROM NOW ON A LITTLE SHOCK. DIDN’T WANT TO TELL MY MOM LIKE HEY, I’M MOVING INTO THIS APARTMENT. BY THE WAY. THERE WAS JUST TWO MURDERS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. SO IT WAS A LITTLE LIKE SURREAL BECAUSE THAT KIND OF STUFF DOESN’T ALWAYS HAPPEN IN YOUR BACKYARD. Rebekah Duvall was sitting in her apartment around 8 p.m. Thursday when her boyfriend called her outside. "There was this woman just pacing up and down the sidewalk, screaming, very distraught, sobbing," Duvall recalled. "And then at some point, I just heard her say, 'He's dead.'"The scene shocked Duvall, who lives in Oxmoor Apartment Homes, an out-of-the-way complex behind Oxmoor Mall. Police have released few details, but on Friday the Jefferson County Coroner's office released the names of the two victims – Stephen Curtis, 40, and Gary Brown, 21. The two men were fatally shot at 1:37 a.m., according to the coroner's office. Family members who declined to be interviewed told WLKY News Curtis lived in the apartment. Holes could be seen outside Curtis's apartment and an apartment across the hall.A resident who lives in the neighboring apartment and did not want to be identified said the bullets exited Curtis's apartment and then struck her apartment. A five-year-old boy was inside the room that was struck, she said.For her part, Duvall said she is reconsidering what safety measures to take in an otherwise quiet apartment community."It was a little surreal because that kind of stuff doesn't always happen in your backyard," she said.Anyone with information is asked to call the anonymous Crime Tip Hotline at 502-574-LMPD (5673) or use the online Crime Tip Portal.
