LEWISTON (WGME) -- Friday marks one week since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
After nearly 50 years, the right to abortion in the United States no longer exists.
Abortion remains legal in Maine, but that didn't stop hundreds from attending a rally opposing the decision Thursday.
Mainers from Augusta to Oxford Hills attended the rally in Lewiston opposing the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"We are fighting for our future, we are fighting for our daughters, our granddaughters and all women," Lewiston City Councilor Linda Scott (Ward 1) said.
Mothers were representing more than themselves.
"It makes me emotional thinking about my daughter,” protester Rachel Harmon said. “Having to live not knowing if basic human autonomy is going to be in question or not."
Speakers reminded the crowd about resources available to them, including Planned Parenthood in Portland, Mabel Wadsworth Center in Bangor and Maine Family Planning in Lewiston.
One speaker emphasized the importance of SafeMaine, the state's abortion fund.
"Abortion funds are a critical part of how people are gonna get through this, how people are gonna travel, how they're gonna get hotel rooms, how they're gonna get rides; get the care that they need," Mareisa Weil of Maine Family Planning, said.
Protesters fear this may only be the start to the elimination of their rights.
"I am an African-American woman,” protester Lashawnda Hill said. “In a predominantly white state, and I live in a very predominantly white area. For me, this is just, this is too important right now. This is just the beginning of many things that we need to stand up and say, ‘We're not going back.’"
While the voices pushed for change, it's now up to states to determine a woman's ability to terminate a pregnancy. Women at the rally say change will only happen at the ballot box.
