Indiana’s permitless handgun carry law goes into effect Friday

INDIANA (WFIE) - Hoosiers will soon no longer be required to have a permit to carry a handgun outside their home or business.

A new permitless carry law is set to go into effect across Indiana on Friday.

This comes after the “constitutional carry” law was signed by Governor Eric Holcomb earlier this year.

Permitless carry means a permit or license is not required to carry a handgun, no matter whether it’s concealed or unconcealed. However, there are still rules in place.

Nobody with a felony or domestic violence charges is allowed to carry a handgun, and there are still limitations on where you can carry it. Places like school zones and federal buildings are still going to be off-limits.

Sgt. Anna Gray with the Evansville Police Department says they worry about the guns that are left in cars when somebody enters a gun-free zone.

“Make sure to lock it up,” Sgt. Gray said. “We have a lot of firearms stolen out of vehicles, so that’s something, you know, that’s a whole other issue to think about. But make sure, you know whether you have, they have these type of gun safes that you can build in, you know build into the seat or under the seat, or just you know, lock your glovebox.”

Police officials say they are going to have to treat every person as if they are armed now, but that they understand it’s their right.
