Nine people – including a juvenile – were shot in an apparent drive-by shooting Thursday evening on a street in Newark, city officials said.
The city’s gunfire detection system alerted police to the shooting, which occurred outside a bodega, shortly after 6 p.m. on the 200 block of Clinton Place, according to Newark Acting Public Safety Director Raul Malave.
“Three adult victims and one juvenile arrived at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for treatment of gunshot injuries,” Malave said in an email. “Four other adult victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries.”
Officials later said another adult arrived at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center after being shot in the same attack.
All of the injured were listed in stable condition, according to Malave. Police were investigating what sparked the shooting, and more details were not immediately available.
During a press conference at the scene, Malave said the suspect’s vehicle was a white Honda Pilot that was reported stolen Thursday out of Jersey City.
“It appears to have been a drive-by shooting,” he said, adding that investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras for potential clues.
News 12 New Jersey reported that police have not yet determined whether the victims had been the intended targets of the assailant.
