It’s safe to say nobody in the final four of the 111th Michigan Amateur Championship knows Hawk Hollow Golf Club better than David Szymanski.
Hawk Hollow is Szymanski’s home course and the recent Michigan State University law school gradate from Holt used his local knowledge Thursday to help produce victories in the round 16 and quarterfinals.
He beat Evan McDermott of Spring Lake 1-up in the morning round and then rallied on the back nine to eliminate Colin Sikkenga of Kalamazoo 2 and 1 in the afternoon round.
Szymanski, who has been studying for the bar exam when not on the golf course, had plenty of family and friends following him Thursday.
“I love having everyone out here,” he said “My expectations were to make match play and I thought if I could match what I did when I was playing college golf (Sweet 16 in 2017), I would be happy.
“Then once I made it, I thought, well, this is my home course and I think I can beat anyone out here.”
Joining Szymanski in the final four wee August Meekhof of Eastmanville, who plays at Michigan State; Nick Krueger of Spring Lake, who plays at Grand Valley State; and Patrick Deardorff of Clarkston, who plays at Eastern Michigan.
Szymanski will play Deardorff in one semifinal Friday morning while Meekhof and Krueger will play in the other. The winners will square off in the championship match Friday afternoon.
