To help keep everyone celebrating the Fourth of July safe. Montana Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies plan on increasing patrols this weekend.
As the Fourth of July weekend usually means an increase in calls. Data shows each year in Montana more than 100 people are killed in crashes involving an impaired driver. Over 350 are seriously injured.
Law enforcement agencies urge people to avoid being a part of that statistic this Independence Day. The Montana Department of Transportation says a DUI could cost someone up to $10,000.
“Just be aware of your surroundings, make sure you're designating a sober driver, or sober ride to come pick you up after you're celebrating,” Bozeman Police patrol captain Joseph Swanson said.
Also with fireworks launching into the sky this weekend, patrol officers will also be making sure people are lighting them safely.
“If you're in a residential area, talk to your neighbors, let them know you're having a firework show or join one of them. Use them appropriately, as well please don't ignite fireworks in any of the parks in front of the hospital's gas stations. Don't put them on top of vehicles under cars,” Swanson said.
In Bozeman city limits fireworks are only allowed to be set off between July 3rd to the 5th, and they can't explode or go higher than 15 feet.
“We get a significant, heavier call volume during the 4th of July weekend. We are aware there are fireworks going off. Many of these are legal that are being used and our officers will respond as they can,” Swanson said.
