ANDERSON TWP., Ohio (WKRC) – The team at OrthoCincy says if you’re headed for joint replacement surgery, even for a hip, you may no longer need a long hospital stay.
Dr. John Fritch is an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoCincy. He says the goal is to prevent the need for these joint replacements by treating hip injuries, such as a slight tear, early on.
“Absolutely, so over time, these tears can progress,” said Dr. Fritch. “They can lead to hip instability, and that instability, over time, can lead to further degradation of the hip and can lead to early arthritis.”
He says if you’re in pain, seek medical attention early. However, if you do end up needing a full or partial joint replacement later in life, you can likely have it done outpatient and go home the same day.
“Actually, the vast majority of my surgeries are same-day,” he said. “I would say less than 5% of people actually need to stay in the hospital."
