GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Drivers will need to have some patience as more construction gets underway in Grand Island.

Work is scheduled to start on July 5 on the Eddy St. underpass with plans for it to be closed for three months.

Signs are already up warning drivers of the closure.

“Ultimately, a little bit of pain now is better than a lot of pain later, we’re just asking for everybody’s patience,” said Acting Public Works Director Keith Kurz. “We know it’s going to be a disruption, that’s why we’re trying to get the word out ahead of time so people can plan.”

The more than 70-year-old structure has not had work as extensive done in some time.

The Eddy Underpass Project includes retaining wall concrete repair, bridge deck concrete repair, North Front Street bridge repair, bird spike installation, roadway and pedestrian lighting replacement and miscellaneous storm sewer improvements.

Kurz said they will make sure to have the underpass open for the 80th annual Harvest of Harmony celebration, scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Diamond Engineering Company of Grand Island will be doing the work for more than $1.3 million dollars.
