Grambling State announces 2022 Legends Sports Hall of Fame class

The 14th Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame includes 11 former athletes and contributors of Grambling State athletics, announced Thursday.

The 2022 class will be inducted to the Legends Sports Hall of Fame on July 9 at 6 p.m. in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center at Grambling State University.

A meet and greet will be held on July 8 at 5 p.m. that is open to the public at the Doris Robinson Hall of the he Eddie G. Robinson Museum including new and previously inducted members of the Hall of Fame.

The class is made up of 10 athletes from five different sports and a former director of the Grambling State Marching Band that will be recognized posthumously as a contributor to GSU athletic in his time with the marching band.

Shiakiea Carter

Sport: women's basketball 

About Carter: Carter was part of the lady Tigers basketball from 1994-98. The guard saw three NCAA tournament appearances during her time at GSU. She set a school record of 469 steals which was then broken in 2019 by Shakyla Hill (493). Carter now serves as the head coach for Grand Oak girls basketball in Conroe, Texas.

Clemente Gordon

Sport: football

About Gordon: Gordon was a quarterback for the Tigers from 1986-89. He played eight seasons in the Arena football league. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 11th round of the 1990 NFL Draft and Chicago White Sox in the 51st round of the 1990 MLB June Amateur Draft.

Dr. James Hammond

sport: baseball

About Hammond: Hammond played baseball for Gambling State.

Conrad Hutchinson Jr.

Marching Band

About Hutchinson Jr.: Hutchinson Jr. (1919-96) was responsible for transforming the Grambling State University marching band. He took over the marching band in 1952 and turned it into the program it is today.

Andrew Jackson

Sport: Football

About Jackson: Jackson played football for GSU.

Joseph Jones

Sport: basketball

About Jones: Jones was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1976 NBA Draft in sixth round.

Yolande Small

Sport: women's track and field

About Small: Small is an All-American runner for GSU from 1982-85.

Eleven former Grambling State athletes make up the 2022 Grambling Legends sports hall of fame class.

Joseph Simpson

Sport: basketball

About Simpson: Simpson graduated from GSU in 1973. He recived All-SWAC first team honors his senior year.

Robert Taylor

Sport: football

About Taylor:  Taylor was a back-to-back All-SWAC first team linebacker (2000-01). In 2001 he was named a first team I-AA All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

Rodney Tureaud

Sport: football

About Tureaud: Tureaud was the first running back to have an 1,000 yard season in seven years in 1972. That same year he earned SWAC offensive player of the year honors.

Juan Watkins

Sport: baseball

About Watkins: Watkins was a pitcher and outfielder for the Tigers from 1984-88. In his four years at GSU he consistently hit above .300 and was given various SWAC All-conference honors.
