Police: Man arrested in deadly shooting that led to SWAT standoff
The deadly shooting of a 67-year-old man happened Thursday in the West End.
CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A man is dead Thursday after a shooting that led to a SWAT situation in a West End residence.
The shooting happened around 12:36 p.m. in Keywitt Alley behind the Hook Fish and Chicken restaurant on Linn Street, police say.
First responders found Walter Metz Jr., 67, dead from a gunshot wound.
The shooter ran to a residence at the intersection of Dayton and Baymiller streets and barricaded themselves in there. A SWAT situation ensued lasting several hours.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the SWAT team commanded two people out of the residence with their hands up. They were not arrested or detained, but they were considered persons of interest, police say.
Sometime Thursday during or after the SWAT standoff, CPD’s Homicide Unit arrested Darnell Nelson, 36, on a murder charge for Metz’s death.
No word on what led to the shooting.
This is the second fatal shooting to happen in West End in fewer than 24 hours.
Mario Williams, 39, was found shot in the 800 block of Poplar Street in the West End just after midnight Thursday, according to CPD.
Gerald Bates is a West End resident of 40 years.
“This neighborhood, we’ve had a lot of violence, but if you’re not involved in it, it kind of passes you by,” he said Thursday night. “I wake up in the morning and read down on Linn Street somebody got shot, and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ Then at night, sometimes we hear gunfire.”
Bates says violence in the neighborhood has decreased since the 1970s, though he does acknowledge the violent last 24 hours.
“I just wish that there was a way we could progress beyond this,” he said. “At least get the crime rate down. It just seems like there’s so much going on.”
