DAWSON, N.D. (KFGO) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol has released the name of a man killed after his pickup ran into the side of a train near Steele, N.D. Tuesday night.
Cole Helmers, 24, of Center, N.D. was traveling northbound pulling a livestock trailer when he struck the second car of a BNSF train. The pickup and trailer rolled into the ditch. Helmers died at the scene.
The Highway Patrol said the train was traveling eastbound between 50 and 60 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The speed of the pickup is unknown.
After impact, the train engineer activated the emergency braking system and stopped. The train was repaired and traveled to the BNSF rail yard in Dilworth, Minn.
Three head of cattle were in the trailer and all died.
The crash remains under investigation.
