Taunton to increase security at local park to crack down on reckless, unsafe behavior

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The city of Taunton is increasing its police presence at a local park to crack down on reckless and unsafe behavior.

Mayor Shaunna O’Connell and Police Chief Edward Walsh said Thursday that Hopewell Park will have heightened security in the area. In addition to police officers, Parks and Recreation commissioner AJ Marshall said he hired a security guard to patrol that area.

Taunton police said they will be strictly enforcing laws and regulating the use of ATVs and bikes on public roadways and parks.

O’Connell wants to make the park and the city a safe environment for everyone as the weather heats up.

“Summer is the time when our kids and families most enjoy the outdoors. Disruptive behavior is not acceptable at our parks and on our streets. We call on parents and guardians to partner with us in ensuring that kids are behaving appropriately and riding their bikes in safe ways. If these bike riders insist on causing problems, there will be consequences,” she said.
