Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures

I used to hear or read where a lot of people I know were off to some exotic island or Hawaii.  In earlier times I lived overseas and enjoyed traveling.  I’ve visited and lived among castles, Swiss chalets, pyramids, the Jordan River, French towers, and done the hula in Honolulu.  Glad I got to do all that.  I wonder what people are doing in these crazy pandemic and financial times to get in their travel fix and have something to share on social media.

We’ve worked hard.  We like our guilty pleasures.  For some it’s a ribeye up at Borderline Café in Powderly.  For me it could be a roast beef lunch at South Main Café in Paris or some garlic shrimp at Tejano’s in Cooper on the square.  We’ve come to spoil ourselves as we pick between El Charro and Juan Pablo’s, depending on personal taste.  Sometimes we struggle in smaller towns as we try to think of some place we hadn’t eaten at that week.  Getting your partner to agree on a choice can be a major conflict.  Before you’re through you may end up considering eating places in 10 nearby towns.

People from affluent backgrounds may not grasp the pleasure and fun the common folks enjoy about being able to pick a place and then get those taste buds rolling.  Many folks grew up with mama cooking most of the time.  It probably tasted as good or better and cost less.  In time more wives took outside jobs making eating out and fast foods more practical. This would give them more family time with mama not having to pull double duty on her job and in the kitchen.  Throw in a million sports activities, people working different hours and sitting down like the Waltons at dinnertime grew less and less common.  Eating at TV trays watching Wheel of Fortune and Gunsmoke almost became the norm.

Some of us have been able to locate that little spot of tranquility or pleasure without having to go too far.  For some it might be a garden or a porch swing, recliner and some refreshment, a sweet dessert and a good cup of coffee.  Maybe it’s to a family cabin or a rental for some fishing.  Maybe it’s just an overnight visit from the grands, with a trip to the hottest new kid movie.

Most people I know in my small town, even the rich ones, seem to enjoy a lot of the same simple things us old guys do.  I meet em in little towns around as we seek out some good food and a little escape time from our ordinary lives.  Seems like most of us do a little better when we have a little something to look forward to.  I still think most of us are still kids at heart.  We love a good laugh or an occasional hug.  If it’s chicken fried or covered with onions or cheese, so much the better.  Enjoy a guilty pleasure and pass out the breath mints.
