A Florida man has been charged after he allegedly stole a vehicle from Grand Island dealership before crashing in Iowa.
William Burch, 49, is charged in Hall County Court with theft by unlawful content – more than $5,000 and false reporting.
According to an arrest affidavit, on Wednesday, Burch came into Anderson Chrysler Dodge Keep Ram, 1803 South Locust St., and requested to test drive a 2019 Dodge Durango. He was given the vehicle after providing the dealership with his Florida ID.
The affidavit says the dealership’s business manager called Burch numerous times requesting the vehicle be returned “only to get excuses and promises that he was on his way back with the vehicle.”
A Grand Island police officer also called Burch only to get the same excuses and promises to return the vehicle which never came to fruition.
On Wednesday evening, the affidavit says a GIPD officer was advised Burch crashed the Durango in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, near Council Bluffs and fled from officers on foot before being arrested.
According to the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office, Burch was booked into the county jail for leaving the scene of an injury crash, failure to maintain or use seatbelts, operating a non-registered vehicle, failure to stop in an assured clear distance, interfering with official acts, theft and failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Burch’s next court date in Hall County is not listed in court records.
