(KNSI) – A new law takes effect Friday allowing the sale of THC edibles and drinks. It turns Minnesota into a quasi-legal market for the ingredient that creates marijuana’s characteristic high.

Any vendor, including bakeries and coffee shops, can sell products to adults 21 and over that contain up to five milligrams of THC per serving. That potency is enough to affect a first-time user and about half as strong as THC limits for marijuana products where recreational use is allowed.

The law applies to all strains of THC. There were no restrictions on delta-eight previously and some products were being sold with such a high concentration of the ingredient that it was causing sickness.

The new statute only allows THC derived from hemp to be utilized. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that national cannabis companies are making active inquiries and plan to begin stocking shelves in the state with products complying with the law. Recreational smoking of marijuana is still prohibited.
