Over the last 31 years, Dan Yerdon has been a postal worker for the United States Postal Service, serving the Lynchburg community.
Thursday was his last time on his route and the residents of Legacy Oaks sent him into retirement in a unique way.
Balloons lined the mailboxes, a saxophone played, and residents welcomed Yerdon on their porch as he entered the neighborhood for one last time.
"I never expected this you know but I wouldn't put it past them because they are such good people. I'm just blown away for the love and appreciation they've showed me," Yerdon said.
Yerdon says ever since he was a 4-year-old he wanted to be a postal worker but before he could start this job he was in the Air Force.
Resident Vacky Freund says he has brought them nothing but mail and smiles since they moved in two years ago.
"He is so friendly! I mean he'll give you the time of day. I'm always going out there and telling my husband you got to stop he's got work to do," Freund said.
Yerdon says he's always been a people person and the community of Legacy Oaks is the perfect example of why.
Another resident, Ken Balasic says it's not just the people that live here that love him.
"He always loved the dogs and the dogs loved him! When I would say Dan the man is here they would be running to the doors and go crazy," Balasic said.
Resident Sally Sease says it's going to be hard to fill his shoes.
"Always on time, you can set your watch by him he's always on time," Sease said.
Although Thursday was full of goodbyes, Yerdon knows it won't be the last they see of him!
"I'll be back like a bad dream I promise you," Yerdon said.
