Ten Alabama counties are reporting high levels of COVID-19 community transmission.

Baldwin, Bibb, Cullman, Escambia, Henry, Jefferson, Madison, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties are in the “high” category, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Levels are determined by the number of new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days, as well as seven-day totals for hospitalizations per 100,000 people and percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by patients.

Twenty-nine counties were listed as having medium levels; the remaining 28 are listed as having “low” levels of transmission. The majority of the counties with low transmission are in the Black Belt in the far western part of the state and a handful of counties in the eastern central part of the state. Alabama currently has a positivity rate of 24.7%, meaning almost a fourth of the COVID-19 tests are showing positive results. The exact percentage is unclear, however, as more people are opting to use at-home tests.

Hospitalizations have ticked up with 437 confirmed COVID-19 patients in Alabama facilities as of Wednesday, an increase of 75 over last week.

Alabama has reported 1.4 million COVID cases since March 2020 with 19,755 deaths. Just over 50% of Alabamians are vaccinated, much lower than the 67% reported nationwide.
