Redding Police Department arrested a man Wednesday after they said a woman called saying her husband was hurting her.
The woman identified Gary Riddle, 64, of Redding, as the man in question.
When dispatch tried to ask the woman clarifying questions, they said a male voice could be heard yelling at the woman.
Police went quickly to the home. When they arrived, officers said Riddle was standing on the front porch, armed with a knife.
Riddle yelled at the responding officers, demanding they shoot him, police said.
Officers said they asked Riddle to drop the knife, but he refused. At that point, police say they struck Riddle with less-lethal beanbag rounds to disarm him and de-escalate the situation.
Riddle was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to be medically cleared.
Riddle was booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges related to domestic violence, brandishing a weapon, assault, destruction of a communication device and elder abuse.
